This 14 karat gold collectable coin celebrates the establishment of Nunavut, translated to mean "our land" in Inuktituk language, as a territory of Canada. For thousands of years, Inuit and their ancestors lived as nomads, developing a relationship with the migratory animals and the changing seasons. Contact with European explorers dramatically altered this way of life. After hundreds of years of change, the contemporary members of this ancient people came together to reclaim their past and preserve it for the future. The Nunavut Act was adopted and received on July 9, 1998. On April 1, 1999, Nunavut was celebrated as Canada's youngest territory to officially join the federation of Canada.
