This pure gold collectable coin highlights the French mariner, navigator, and explorer Jacques Cartier (1491-1557). Cartier was employed by the king of France to find the areas of North America abundant with gold and gems, and to find a northwest passage to Asia. Although Cartier was not the first European to visit eastern Canada, his discovery and exploration of the St. Lawrence laid the groundwork for centuries of trade and settlement to follow. It is from his map design and other records that Europeans gained some of their earliest understanding of the landscape of North America and the customs of its Indigenous peoples.
