This pure gold collectable coin highlights the French-Canadian explorer, soldier, and fur trader Pierre Gaultier de La Vérendrye (1685-1749). Inspired by Indigenous accounts of a western waterway beyond Lake Superior, La Vérendrye set out to discover a "great western sea". His journey during 1731 to 1743 would open up the land and waterways of present-day Manitoba, bringing La Vérendrye and his men all the way to the eastern edges of the Rocky Mountains, farther into the Canadian West than any previous explorer of European descent.
